The Mommy’s Review – Rio 2

Much cheaper than a plane ticket to Brazil for Spring Break is a movie ticket for the bright, entertaining Rio 2, in theaters now.  The film kicks off some time after the first Rio film and now the two blue Spix's Macaws -- Blu (jesse Eisenberg) and Jewel (Anne Hathaway) -- are parents to three little birds, and living in a nature preserve near Rio.  With possible sightings of more Spix's Macaws in the Amazon, the family takes off with some of their feathery friends in tow.

I don't want to spoil too much, so I'll just tell you that the neurotic, human-raised Blu doesn't feel comfortable in such unfamiliar settings, travelling with a fanny pack, GPS, and Swiss Army knife.  Jewel and the kids are thriving in the rainforest, reconnecting with their roots and their true spirits as birds.  A good part of the film deals with loggers who are illegally cutting down the trees, potentially threatening the birds' native habitat as well as Blu and Jewel's human friends, Tulio and Linda.

Overly dramatic bad cockatoo Nigel (Jemaine Clement) is back for the ride, set on avenging his now flightless state by attempting to kill Blu with the help of poisonous tree frog Gabi, voiced with devilish deliciousness by Kristin Chenoweth. The scenes of Nigel plotting Blu's demise might be a little dark for younger kids, but be assured that Nigel gets what he deserves in the end.

The movie is filled with laughs, adventure, and great music -- which should come as no surprise since Brazilian music legend Sergio Mendes was Rio 2's  music supervisor.  Rio 2 is fun and enchanting, and little ones will certainly sit still enough to enjoy the 101-minute journey through Brazil.
