Northern New Jersey kids are so lucky to have many options for live entertainment. They can see anything in Manhattan, but they can also see so many great performances right here in the Garden State.  There are two cool shows coming to our area soon, and The Mommy's Review is excited to share them with you!

Super Why! Live

If your kids are anything like mine, they probably love the show Super WHY on PBS Kids.  This is one show I don't mind my children watching at all since it's so smartly done and teaches great problem-solving skills in a creative, entertaining way.  Well, you'll be happy to know that there is now a stage version of Super WHY as well as a new soundtrack CD - Super WHY Live: You've Got the Power (Razor & Tie).

Our newsletter delivers the local news that you can trust.

The album features many songs familiar to Super WHY viewers, but kicked up a notch!  It showcases the Super Readers—Alpha Pig, Wonder Red, Princess Presto, and Super Why himself—going on adventures that help build a love of words and reading. The music was written by New Jersey's own Jack Antonoff, otherwise known as the guitarist for the GRAMMY®-winning rock band Fun.

The catchy and educational songs are part of the Super WHY stage show which brings these characters and these songs to life.  Super WHY Live is coming to the Mayo PAC in Morristown on Tuesday, April 30th and to the State Theatre in New Brunswick on May 8.

Bari Koral Family Rock Band

One thing that really irks me about children's music is that so many artists claim that the music is something parents won't hate, but often that is not the case!  Bari Koral Family Rock Band is such a breath of fresh air that I don't mind that my kids want to hear their new album, Anna and the Cupcakes (Magenta Records), on repeat, ALL THE TIME!  Bari's music is a refreshing blend of light rock with a twangy kick, and you just might find yourself with songs such as "Hearts," "Train Song," and "Gingerbread Man," stuck in your head, and maybe humming a tune or two throughout the day.  Even when your kids are not around.

One of my favorite songs on the album is the clever "Kick Drum Heart," a cover of a tune by the folk-rock band The Avett Brothers. This sweet song about the feeling of falling in love is something that I could easily hear on a grown-up radio station!

Fans of Laurie Berkner or Lisa Loeb's children's albums should definitely seek out Bari and her recordings.  Her lyrics are funny, smart, and touching at times, adventurous, silly, and obviously memorable. Bari Koral Family Rock Band is performing at SOPAC on May 11th.
