Plain and simple: if you are a mom - you will love Karen Alpert's new book, I Want My Epidural Back: Adventures in Mediocre Parenting.

If you are a spouse or partner to a mom, and you didn't buy a Mother's Day present yet, you should get your bottom over to a bookstore or order it AS SOON AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE and with 2-day shipping to get it here in time. This is nothing short of the funniest, most honest book about parenting I've ever read... that is, besides Alpert's first book, I Heart My Little A-Holes. (You can see my story about that book here.)

Chicago-area mom Alpert is better known as Baby Sideburns, the unflinchingly TMI parenting queen of social media. You can find her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram dishing out hysterical dispatches about her life as a mom and wife. Picky eaters, bodily fluids, sex, and overall parenting chaos are some of the themes of her work, and so many moms will find that these topics resonate with them -- even if they don't want to admit it. But don't for a second think that Alpert's book will gross you out or make you feel bad - it's completely the opposite! She has such a way with words and interpreting situations that you can't help but laugh out loud.

I Want My Epidural Back is filled with short pieces, transcripts, and quick observations about Alpert's kids, husband, other parents, teachers, and more, so it's an easy and fast read for us busy moms who don't normally have TIME to read! I think you can get a good idea about the tone and timbre of the book when you read the chapter headings like "Here An Orifice, There an Orifice, Everywhere an Orifice Orifice," "How the F to Entertain Your Rugrats When You Have Nothing to Do," and "Tell Those Overachieving Moms To Suck It."

Alpert does switch to a serious note in this book when she talks about life as a parent post-Newton, how she sometimes drives out of her way to pass by her kids' school to make sure everything looks okay. That is something that I think many of us understand and possibly even do as well. She shows some depth and balance by mixing this in with all the humor.

That said, I highly recommend I Want My Epidural Back to all the moms out there, and I wish you all a very Happy Mother's Day!
