The Westfield Area YMCA is committed to helping older adults be active in spirit, mind and body. Daily adult water and group fitness classes are available for participants to enjoy and stay fit. There are also exercise programs for special health groups such as: Arthritis Exercise; Project Healthy Bones; and Delay the Disease: Exercise to Fight Parkinson’s Symptoms. The Y’s popular Bridge program includes various levels of classes instructed by Robin Gillett, ACBL accredited bridge instructor and ACBL Tournament Director.
New this session is Adult Beginner String Instrument Lessons. Warren Cohen, Artistic Director of the NJ Intergenerational Orchestra, will teach the basics of learning how to play a violin or cello including the proper technique for holding the instrument and producing good tone. Knowing how to read music is not required, and an instrument is provided to each participant. The class will meet for eight Thursdays beginning September 19 from 12:30 to 2 pm. This program is available to the community. There is a maximum class size of 10 students Register by 9/16.

Day Trip to NYC High Line – Wednesday, Oct. 2, 8:45 a.m. - 4 p.m.
This trip includes round trip bus transportation and a guided tour with lunch “on your own.” The bus leaves the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA parking lot at 8:45 a.m. and returns at 4 p.m. Available to the community. Register by 9/30.
Overlook Medical Center Healthy Avenues Van at the Y – Thursday, Oct. 17, 10 a.m. - noon
Free for members and the community. Topics and screenings include breast health education, blood pressure and glucose screenings. Register directly with Gabrielle Guider at Atlantic Health System, Overlook Medical Center, at 908-522-2579. The van is parked outside the Main Y Facility.
Stand Taller and Look Better – Wednesday, Oct. 23, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
Free and open to the community. Physical therapists from Ivy Rehab in Westfield will discuss and demonstrate ways to be safe while walking with improved posture and confidence. Register by 10/22.
Check, Change, Control Cholesterol – Wednesday, Oct. 30, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
Free and open to the community. The “Check, Change, Control Cholesterol” initiative developed by the American Heart Association (AHA) includes 7 simple steps that every person can adopt for healthy living. The Atlantic Medical Group has partnered with the AHA in developing tools and resources to better educate, engage and influence patients to better manage their cholesterol and lipids and their overall cardiovascular risk. Presenter is Dr. Robert D. Fishberg, a longtime Westfield resident who works as a clinical cardiologist with Associates in Cardiovascular Disease and Atlantic Medical Group. Register by 10/29.
