Public Gardens:  Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Bruce Crawford, Director of Rutgers Gardens and adjunct professor in Landscape Architecture at Rutgers University will share his knowledge on creating public gardens

Dating back over 400 years, public gardens originally focused on medicinal plants.  During the Victorian period and throughout the twentieth century, public gardens displayed newly discovered plants from around the globe as well as, the latest and ever more showy cultivars.

Their mission is once gain shifting as the needs of the community increasingly focus on environmental issues and food insecurity.  In addition, more and more individuals suffer from "Plant Blindness", an issue whereby people simply do not recognize plants in their environment and the importance of plants in the biosphere.

Bruce will address how Rutgers Gardens and other public gardens across North America are working to address these important issues and turn the pages of public horticulture to the next chapter.
