Choral Evensong at St. Paul's Westfield

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield will present a special Choral Evensong on Sunday, March 17, 2019, at 4:00 p.m.

New Jersey residents are cordially invited to attend. St. Paul’s Rector, the Rev. Dr. Duncan Johnston advises that, “People have been praying Evensong for many hundreds of years, and we're pleased to offer this unique blend of spectacular music and soothing prayer to the Westfield community and beyond. Beautiful words and stunning music are two of God's greatest gifts and we are thrilled to pass them on to Evensong attendees.”

“This year’s Choral Evensong comes at a special and wonderful time of celebration", continues Johnston.  "St Paul's is 125 years old this year.   We wish to thank the people of the town for their love and friendship since 1894, and we invite everyone to celebrate the start of our next 125 exciting years on March 17."

In tune with this, the St. Paul’s choir, led by Music Director Mark Hyczko, will perform a new anthem, ‘Rejoice in Hope, by native New York composer and Pulitzer Prize for Music winner Paul Moravec.  The anthem, commissioned by Director Hyczko on behalf of St. Paul’s, is based on Paul’s Letter to the Romans (Romans 12:9-21) in which he advises his “Brothers and Sisters” to “Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer [and to] “Live in harmony with one another, live peaceably with all.”

In keeping with Paul’s message of peace and hope, Mr. Hyczko explains that, “The ‘program’ for an Evensong is not in recital or concert format.  This allows the listener some freedom to relax, meditate and enjoy the music.  I recently learned,” he states, “that Evensong attendance in England’s Anglican Churches has risen and continues to rise, despite declining attendance in British churches overall.  Perhaps this is because the service demands no particular religious commitment, but simply offers busy people a chance to get away from an otherwise hectic daily grind for a few private, spiritual and musical moments.”

Mr. Hyczko adds that, “We selected all the music and liturgy from what we believe St. Paul’s might have programmed at an Evensong 125 years ago.  The hymns, prayers, responses, etc. will hail from the 1892 Book of Common Prayer and the 1892 Hymnal.”

St. Paul's Episcopal Church is located at 414 East Broad St. in Westfield. The 45-minute service starts promptly at 4 p.m. There is no charge and parking is also free. For more information, call Music Director Mark Hyczko at 908-232-8506, ext. 10.
