Here’s the Here's the church, here's the steeple -- Steeple Concerts, that is, at St. Paul's, Westfield!

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield, NJ is proud to announce the Steeple Concert Series, comprised of three upcoming Contemporary/ Classical events to which the music-loving public is cordially invited.  First on the Steeple Concerts program is The New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra (NBCO), who will perform their esteemed “TRANSCENDENCE” concert on Saturday, February 9, 2019, at 7:30 P.M. at St. Paul’s. All are welcome to attend.

The concert  title, “TRANSCENDENCE,” reflects NBCO’s wish to “reframe classical music and explore the mystical minimalism” of three contemporary composers:  Polish composer Henryk Górecki, whose “Harpsichord Concerto, Op.40” is featured; Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, whose “Tabula Rasa” is also featured; and British composer Sir John Tavener, whose “Mahashakti” will make its North American debut on February 9 at St. Paul’s.

NBCO’s conductor, Mark Hyczko, is also the new Music Director at St. Paul’s.  He succeeds the venerable Charles M. Banks who, following a 32-year career at the church, retired in June 2018.  Mr. Hyczko was unanimously selected as Mr. Banks’ successor in 2018, out of five finalists narrowed from a pool of some 40 applicants.

He has served as Music Director and Conductor of NBCO since 2012.  In addition, he currently teaches at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and is   Choir Director and Organist at Temple B’nai Or in Morristown. Listener friendly musical innovation and high energy are his trademarks.  Accentuating these, he began the successful NBCO@Zimmerli SALON lecture series (Rutgers) in 2015 as a means of promoting NBCO’s innovative programming of contemporary classical works focusing on the works of living composers.

Mr. Hyczko received his Master’s Degree in Piano from The New School’s Mannes College of Music (NYC), where he studied under Pavlina Dokovska. He also holds degrees in both Music and Chemistry from Rutgers University.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church is located at 414 E. Broad Street (near Euclid Ave.) in Westfield.  Parking is free. Tickets at the door are $25 (adults) and $10 (students). You can also purchase discounted Steeple Concert Series tickets online at www.steepleconcerts.org. Concert attendees are invited to a gala reception after the event.  For more information, contact St. Paul's Music Director Mark Hyczko at (908) 232-8506 X10.
