One Billion Rising Flash Mob Dance
On Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 11:45am, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault Intervention Services (DASI) and Sussex County Community College (SCCC) will join with women and men around the world for ONE BILLION RISING, the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. As part of the partnership between DASI and SCCC, the Center for Diversity and Equality and the Sussex County Antiviolence Project are teaming up to offer students, faculty, and community members the opportunity to take part in the One Billion Rising campaign in a flash mob dance against violence in the SCCC Cafeteria. One may attend without dancing, however, the simple dance steps can be learned via a YouTube video at .
ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. On February 14, 2013, V-Day’s 15th anniversary, DASI and SCCC will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men from over 200 countries to express outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.
“When we started V-Day 14 years ago, we had the outrageous idea that we could end violence against women,” says Eve Ensler, founder of V-Day. “Now, we are both stunned and thrilled to see that this global action is truly escalating and gaining force, with union workers, parliament members, celebrities, and women of all backgrounds coming forward to join the campaign. When we come together on February 14, 2013 to demand an end to violence against women and girls it will be a truly global voice that will rise up.”
Although not necessary in order to attend, participants are encouraged to sign up online at http://onebillionrising.org/page/event/detail/startarising/4jv9t. For info call 973-579-2386 x223 or e-mail email@example.com. To learn more about V‑Day and its campaigns visit www.vday.org
