Singer and the Sewing Machine Wars

MORRISTOWN, NJ – It was an American invention that changed the world, but the first years of the practical sewing machine were a tumultuous affair, something not unfamiliar to the man who became synonymous with it, Isaac M. Singer.

Join Morris County Historical Society Collections Curator Anne Motto Monday, July 20, at 11 a.m. as she explores how the early sewing machine companies battled for supremacy before resolving their differences and pooling their patents. “Singer and the Sewing Machine Wars” also touches on the extraordinary life of Singer, an inventor and sometimes actor, whose company emerged as the undisputed leader in the sewing machine industry by the 1890s. The program relates to the ongoing MCHS exhibit, Cut from Different Cloth: The Art of Women’s Handwork, 1865-1925, which includes three Singer sewing machines.

MCHS is located at Acorn Hall, 68 Lafayette Ave., Morristown, and is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission, which includes the exhibits and grounds, is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for students, and is free for children younger than 12 and MCHS members.
