Small Plates for a Great Cause

Members of Westfield High School’s Blue Devils Varsity Football Team and cheerleaders will be featured fashion show models for Westfield Rotary Club Foundation’s annual fundraiser, Small Plates for a Great Cause.

The party has become a “hot ticket” kicking off the autumn social season to meet and mingle with neighbors and associates while helping Rotary in its efforts to alleviate hunger in our community through its Project Hunger Program and provide college scholarships for local students. The evening consists of sampling savory appetizers, sipping wine and shopping with discounts courtesy of Lord & Taylor.

The music of the acclaimed duo of singer Anna Petrillo and Fred Golz will include a selection of traditional, new and jazz favorites sponsored by Northfield Bank for the listening pleasure of the attendees.

Last year’s event was a sell-out. This year the evening’s fare will include appetizers prepared by thirty of the area’s finest restaurants and caterers and wine tasting from prominent vineyards, According to Lord and Taylor Manager, Karen Orsini, the Blue Devils and cheerleaders will be wearing the latest fashions and the store will provide generous discounts for shopping as well as donate a percentage of revenue during the evening to the Rotary foundation.

Rotarian Philip Salerno, Chairman of the Rotary Club Foundation Board, says of Small Plates for a Great Cause, “Once again it is going to be a fantastic evening thanks to our many collaborators, especially Karen Orsini and Lord & Taylor for their generous invitation to use their outstanding facility and to offer shopping discounts.”

Mr. Salerno detailed some specific Rotary programs that will benefit from proceeds of Small Plates for a Great Cause in further detail, “Among the club’s concerns is childhood hunger. In our beautiful town, frequently referred to as ‘affluent,’ teachers have noticed a segment of children who have concentration issues in class due to hunger. While the kids are recipients of lunches under a government program, they may go hungry on weekends. We participate in a project with the school system known as the ‘Backpack Program’ in which a committee fills
backpacks with easy to prepare, nutritional food that teachers can confidentially distribute to the needy children on Fridays.”

He continued, “Our Rotary club has a long-standing tradition of awarding college scholarships to qualified local students. Ours is the largest scholarship program in the town having awarded $3 million since 1923. It is financed through members’ annual fund raising activities and the donations and bequests of citizens invested in a fund managed by the Westfield Foundation.”

Tickets for “Small Plates for a Great Cause” are $40 per person and may be purchased from Rotary Club members, or e-mail Smallplates2018@yahoo.com.
