“The Cat Men of Gotham: Tales of Feline Friendship in Old New York”

The nineteenth century was a rough time to be a stray cat in New York City. But a few lucky strays —the Cinderella cats–found homes with firemen, cops, athletes, politicians and others who rescued them from the streets and welcomed them into their homes and hearts.

On Wednesday, June 9 at 7 pm, join the Scotch Plains Public Library for a special virtual program with Peggy Gavan, author of The Cat Men of Gotham to hear the story of these heroic cat men and their feline companions. You will hear about the feline police force of the New York City Post Office, the oldest Brooklyn Navy Yard cat who survived an explosion on board the USS Maine, the beloved feline mascot of La Guardia Airport who made many cross-country flights, a blind cat who wore glasses and saved Brooklyn Borough Hall when he was 27 years old, and many more amazing cat tales.

Gavan will leave you with a new appreciation for Old New York and the people and animals who made it their home. This program is certain to appeal to cat fanciers and history fans alike.

Gavan has worked in diverse fields as an editor, reporter and writer.  She is currently a senior medical editor in pharmaceutical advertising. She is a licensed New York City Tour Guide, and volunteers with the Warwick Valley Humane Society as a cat visitor.

Registration is required to receive the Zoom link to this program.
