West Orange Flag Day Celebration

Fire Chief Anthony Vecchio invites the public to attend the annual Flag Day celebration. The much-anticipated ceremony, which was canceled last year, returns to Fire Headquarters at 415 Valley Road at 10:30a.m. on June 14th. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #376 will conduct the ritual of flag retirement. The public is asked to bring their unserviceable American flags to be included as part of the ceremony The solemn event provides for proper disposal of faded, worn, or weather-beaten flags.

This year’s ceremony will be especially meaningful because it marks the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Glennon/Sayers VFW Post#376 in West Orange. The post’s long-time commander Ralph Panciello passed away earlier this year. Panciello was a driving force in helping West Orange achieve the proud distinction of becoming New Jersey’s Most Decorated Community.

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. The first national observance for flag day was held on June 14, 1877. For more information about this event please contact West Orange Fire Headquarters at (973) 325-4175.
