Westfield Memorial Library hosts Meditation, African Artwork and Downloading to a Laptop

On Tuesday, February 19, the Westfield Memorial Library will present a program on meditation, and on Wednesday, February 20 a program on West African art, and on Thursday, February 21 a class on downloading to a laptop. The library is located at 550 East Broad Street.

The mediation class will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be lead by long time meditator and retired corporate Executive Vice President, Jim Rose. In this engaging workshop he will teach participants how to use meditation to transform the heart.

He will explore how to incorporate more love and peace in daily life, which can have a profound transformation on overall well-being. Participants will learn to let go of anger, fear and worry in order to create more harmonious relationships, better work and home environments, and experience a deep sense of personal peace and love. There will be two short meditation sittings.

On Wednesday, February 20 at 7:00 p.m., popular speaker Michael Norris will explore the cultural tapestry of West Africa through centuries of art from within its 18 present-day countries, especially the Benin kingdom of the Edo people. Included will be sculpture, metalwork, and ivories from local museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Princeton University Art Museum.

Norris earned his BA in classics from the University of California at San Diego, his MA in classics and Ph.D. in art history, both at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He spent twenty years at the Cloisters Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and has lectured all over the world.

On Thursday, February 21 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., a Westfield Memorial Librarian will teach All about Downloading to a Laptop Computer. Due to the hands-on nature of this class, registration is available to Westfield Resident Cardholders only.

The class will cover how to access digital music, books and movies from the library’s website and how to download them to laptop computers. It will cover downloading from Overdrive, Flipster, Hoopla, Freading, and Ebsco Ebooks.

Attendees must come with their library card number and a laptop computer.

The programs are free and open to Westfield Memorial Library and MURAL cardholders unless otherwise indicated. (MURAL cardholders belong to the 40+ libraries that are part of the Middlesex Union Reciprocal Agreement Libraries. Check the library’s website to see if your library participates.)
