What Unity Really Means

Like so many of you I’ve watched the events of the last week in horror.

I have not watched them in shock, I have long thought that violence would erupt during this transfer of power. I have seen the signs – the increasing violence, the rise in the acceptance of hate, racism, antisemitism and sexism. The armed militias, the increasing desperate cries, the willingness to use lies to ...

Inciting Violins

When I was little, my dad, who knew everything, gave me a present.

I watched with curious anticipation one day as he tied a long length of thread taken from my mom’s sewing basket onto the closed ends of a thick wire coat hanger. He instructed me to place the loop of thread over the top of my head so that the upside down hanger dangled freely in front of me, somewhere around my ...

“There is an amazing democracy about death,” Dr. King said.

Those words reverberate fiercely today as we witness over 3,000 deaths every day in American from COVID-19. The total 394,000 ...

A Student's Perspective: Teachers "Retiring" Creates Class Disruptions

PARKLAND, FL- As a junior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, I was deeply upset to find out our Wednesday class had been canceled because our English teacher has “chosen” to retire. The English teacher, who was loved by every student she taught, had been teaching virtually since the first day of school until that was no longer an option.

Now that teachers are being ...

New Jersey Date Night: Get Comfortable at These Good Old-Fashioned Diners

New Jersey Date Night is a series on NJ Flavor by relationship writer Craig Rogers.

A new year is upon us and optimistically one may believe that the possibilities are endless. Granted we just came off a year so horrific that it makes Divorce Court look better than Disneyland, so it’s reasonable to be a little trepidatious. But then again, aiming for the positive is a mindset that ...

The Girls by Lori Lansens

The Girls by Lori Lansens.  ( Back Bay Books, 2005)

I enjoy watching The Learning Channel’s hit show, Thousand Pound Sisters. Every time my husband, Tom, catches me watching it, he shakes his head and mutters, “I don’t know why you watch this show. . .” (To be fair, I don’t get The Mandalorian, but each to his own).

So, why do I watch ...

The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult

The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult. (Random House, 2020)

Death has never been more a part of my consciousness than in the year 2020. We are getting daily death totals just like we used to get on the nightly news during the Vietnam War. But, death is not a subject that humans like to dwell on. Most of us put thoughts of our mortality on the back burner so that we are able to ...
