Anthony Manochio Sr., of Union, passed away suddenly on Saturday July 3.

Anthony was born on August 30, 1937 in Newark, NJ. He attended Sussex Avenue Grammar School and Barringer High School before graduating from Bloomfield College and obtaining a Master’s Degree at Seton Hall University. After graduating high school, Anthony joined the workforce for a short while before finding his true calling in the field of education. Upon completion of his teaching degree, he started off as an Elementary School Teacher in Edison Public Schools and Nutley Public Schools. He then moved on to teach in the Newark Public School system for the remainder of his career where he was a teacher, Vice Principal, and Director of an ESL program for adults. For years, Anthony shaped and influenced the minds of many young people and adults before retiring as an Assistant to the Superintendent in the Newark Public School System.

He married Aurora (nee Dente) on June 23, 1962, in a beautiful mass at Sacred Heart Church in Newark. Anthony resided half of his life in Newark before moving to Union with his wife in 1984. The two were married for 59 wonderful years and created a lifetime of cherished memories together with their family. Even after retirement, Anthony went on to continue being an influential and prominent figure of the Union Public Schools as a member of the Union Board of Education where he also proudly served as President. He was furthermore very active and well-loved in the Township of Union, as he was a longtime member of the UNICO Club, Knights of Columbus Council #4504, and Fairway Drive Civic Association. His Sundays were also spent at St. Michael’s Church where he was an Usher and money counter for over 15 years.

In his personal life, Anthony was an amazing husband and father. He selflessly put his family above all else and they adored him. He always made it a point to be present in all of his children’s and grandchildren’s lives, which included proms, award ceremonies, graduations, sports, dance recitals amongst many others. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for his family. He entered into early retirement to take care of his grandchildren, where he got to spend the most time with his family, enjoying many trips to the Jersey Shore, vacations in Florida, and visited numerous places around the world with his beloved wife. Friends and family will forever remember him as the proud Italian-American, “Tony,” who made the best Pizza Gain and ranked up there with Fats Domino singing his favorite song of all time, Blueberry Hill. Anthony leaves behind a long legacy of education, strong family values and lots of laughter. He encouraged and challenged anyone he came into contact with to follow their passions and will be remembered as someone who lived life to its fullest. His life is one to be celebrated and his legacy will be remembered and carried on by his loving family.

He was predeceased by his parents, Angelo and Mildred (nee Fesce) Manochio of Newark, and leaves behind his wife, children, grandchildren and his dear sister, Audrey Verlezza and brother-in-law Tommy Verlezza of Forked River. Anthony leaves behind his loving wife and children - Anthony Manochio Jr. and his wife Fernanda, Michele Johnston and her husband Bob, and Michael Manochio and his wife Tia. Anthony was also the adoring grandfather of his 7 grandchildren who fondly knew him as “Pop Pop” - Ashley, Cristina, Nicole, Michelle, Michael, Sophia and Dante. His family is devastated by his untimely passing. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a visitation for Anthony at the McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Ave. Union on Thursday July 15 from 2:00 pm-8:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Church in Union on Friday July 16 at 10:15 am. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.
