Gloria Jean Westervelt, 72, of Flagtown, died April 2, 2022 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerville after a brief battle with brain cancer.

Born in New York City to Rene and Angelina Colon (nee DeScala), she was raised in Flagtown and was a lifelong resident.

Gloria started working for VA Lyons Health Care at the age of 16, after graduating from Somerville High School in 1967. She worked in the VA Lyons Hospital as a Ward Manager for over 25 years and also was the VAH Lyons Employee Federal Credit Union manager/treasurer for 48 years.

Gloria loved all sports, especially watching tennis and golf. She was on the Lyons-sponsored softball team and bowling league where she enjoyed time spent with her colleagues and friends. She even was on “Bowling for Dollars” on TV. Gloria was an avid gardener and loved to barbeque. She enjoyed the beach, fishing, and spending quality time with her family, friends, and especially her animals.

She was preceded in death by her mother Angelina Descala and stepfather Tony Dorsa, her father Rene Colon, and her siblings Rene Colon, Jr., Mercy Greenaway and brother-in-law Jerry McDonald.

Surviving are her dear companion, Frank Case, her loving sister, Patricia Kemp, her adored nieces and nephews, Liesje and husband Charlie and family, George and wife Michelle and family, Kelly and husband Tom and family, Tricia and husband Leon and family, James and wife Liz, and her loyal companions Smokey and Sandy the cats and dog Princess, as well as her Lyons VA colleagues, extended family, and friends.
