Jahahd Omar Eldrich Payne, 23, of Randolph, New Jersey, was born on March 5, 1996 to Oylema Lewis and Cheron Payne and lived in Randolph most of his life. After 23 years of blessing the world with his effervescence, the Lord called Jahahd home to dance, sing and shout with the angels on August 5, 2019.

Jahahd joined Calvary Baptist Church in Morristown, New Jersey, in 2001 when he was just five years old. Baptized two years later, Jahahd remained a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church for the rest of his life, rarely missing a Sunday at church. He participated in the youth, praise dance and performance arts ministries, and sang in the choir.

Calvary served as the gateway to Jahahd’s sensibilities as a performing artist. When it came to his dancing ability, Jahahd likely snuck in line twice to receive a double dose of rhythm, coordination, agility and creativity from God. Ceaselessly demonstrating a keen sense of awareness and appreciation of the source of this great gift, Jahahd knew how to praise the Lord with authenticity and fervor and never exercised restraint. His emotionally charged and stirring praise dance and mime performances always evoked tears, shouts, claps and stomps from everyone. Captivated audiences would sit with bated breath in anticipation of his next spirit-filled move or gesture.

Jahahd’s confidence as a dancer led him to perform in dance showcases, recitals and pep rallies at his alma maters, Randolph High School and Fernbrook Elementary School. In 2012, he took first place in NJ’s Best Youth Expo for his self-choreographed, hip-hop dance routine.

Multitalented, Jahahd’s gifts also extended to visual art (mostly acrylic paint) and spoken word. He attended the County College of Morris in Randolph to explore options grounded in artistic expression.

Jahahd loved children, especially those with special needs, and touched the lives of many as a staff member of YES Camp in Morristown, Pump It Up in Randolph and Celebrate the Children in Denville. He embodied a fun-loving, carefree, “Peter Pan” spirit that kept him eternally young at heart and relatable to younger generations.

Whether affectionately known to some as “Hahd Payne,” “Hahd,” “Hahdi,” “Hodini,” “J-Breezy,” “Bruddy,” “Pal” or “The Boy,” Jahahd’s infectious smile, easygoing disposition, forgiving nature, and humble service were known to all and will be missed dearly.

Jahahd leaves to cherish his precious memory his parents, Oylema and Sean Lewis, and Annie and Cheron Payne; his siblings, Sorayah Chavis and Nehemiah Lewis; his grandparents, Valerie and Charles Howard, and Charlene Payne and Albert Rainey; his Godparents, Katuraka and Kamar Mullgrav, Scott Whiting and Chaz Howard; his fiancée, Shadai Landrum; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family (including a God-nephew) and friends. Jahahd predeceases the birth of his first child, a daughter to be named Prudence, due in October.
