Joan Lowell Smith of Westfield

Joan Lowell Smith, 85, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick. Joan was born in Orange, NJ, on June 20, 1933, to William and Katherine Lowell and lived in Westfield, NJ, virtually her whole life. 

Joan attended Lasell College and Drake business school. Joan was a syndicated columnist and feature writer who won 17 New Jersey Press Woman awards. Her diverse career included working for Jerome Hines and NJ Assemblyman Chuck Hardwick, as well as a book editor and talk show host. 

Joan was also active in community organizations including service as executive director of the Westfield Chamber of Commerce, Chair of Westfield Hall of Fame, member of National Federation of Press Women, Association for Children with Learning Disabilities and Westfield Day Care Center just to name a few.

Joan was predeceased by her former husband, Warren Smith, brother, Bill Lowell, and daughter, Nancy Lowell. She is survived by her nieces, Nancy, Susan, and Meg Lowell; her daughter, Deborah Kelly, and three grandchildren, Kendal, Molly, and Kyle Kelly-Yahner. 

Private arrangements are in the care of Dooley Colonial Home in Westfield.
