Caldwell College will Present Annual Christmas Spectacular Friday Night

December 5, 2012 at 10:52 PM

CALDWELL, NJ - This Friday, December 7, the Department of Music at Caldwell College will be presenting their Annual Christmas Spectacular.  Sure to delight all music lovers, the concert will take place at 8pm in the Student Center Auditorium.

The event will feature the following performing ensembles:
* The High School Honor Band under the direction of Rebecca Vega

* The Caldwell College Wind Ensemble under the direction of Rebecca Vega

* The Caldwell College Choir under the direction of Dr. Laura Greenwald

Dr. Greenwald commented on her College Choir: “This choir is the finest I have ever worked with in my 24 years at Caldwell College.  Last year they performed in NYC and Montclair with Schola Cantorum on Hudson as the Cantorum Young Singers, singing in a premiere of a cantata by Andrea Clearfield.   This year they have performed with the Garden State Opera, and sung for the Montclair Rotary and Caldwell Kiwanis.”

The choral program will feature the following pieces, all with an international theme:

* A La Nanita Nana
This piece is a traditional 18th century Spanish Christmas Carol which has become an anthem throughout the Hispanic world.  The soothing melody matches the lyrics honoring the newly born baby Jesus.

The English translation is as follows:
“A la nanita nana, nanita ea, nanita ea,
Sleep, sleep my little Jesus,
May peace attend Thee, may peace attend Thee.
To the world, little Savior, New hope thou'rt bringing
All the world, little Savior, Thy praises singing,
God's angels hov'ring o'er Thee chant alleluia.
A la nanita nana, nanita ea.”

* Carol of the Bells
The well known melody, originally titled "Shchedryk" (“Beautiful Evening”) was a folk tune written for the New Year in 1904 by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych;  it is still sung regularly in the Ukraine on New Year’s Eve.    The 4 note repeating ostinato motif was later adapted by New Jersey composer, Peter Wilhousky, who published new lyrics for the arrangement in 1936, and titled his piece “Carol of the Bells.”  In the Ukraine, the repeating melody is thought to have prehistoric, and magical origins. Wilhousky was said to have commented that the folk tune reminded him of ringing bells, and he wrote new lyrics to fit the sound.

While the text of the original Ukrainian “Shchedryk” describes a swallow that flies into a family’s home to assure them that they will have a successful year, “The Carol of the Bells” lyrics are as follows:
“Hark! how the bells, Sweet silver bells
All seem to say, "Throw cares away."
Christmas is here, Bringing good cheer
To young and old, Meek and the bold

Ding, dong, ding, dong, That is their song
With joyful ring, All caroling
One seems to hear, Words of good cheer
From ev'rywhere, Filling the air

Oh how they pound, Raising the sound,
O'er hill and dale, Telling their tale,
Gaily they ring,  While people sing
Songs of good cheer, Christmas is here.

Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas

On, on they send, On without end
Their joyful tone, To ev'ry home

Ding, dong, ding, dong.’

* Noel Nouvelet
A traditional, French Sacred Carol composed in the early 16th century as a hymn to the New Year, it was eventually performed with words best fitting a Christmas Carol.

The literal English translation would be as follows:
“New Christmas, Christmas we sing here,
Devout people, let us shout our thanks to God!

Let us sing Christmas for the new King!
New Christmas, Christmas we sing here.

The angel said, “Shepherds leave this place!
In Bethlehem you'll find the little angel.

In Bethlehem, all united,
Were found the child, Joseph, and Mary too.

Soon, the Kings, by the bright star
To Bethlehem came one morning.

One brought gold, the other priceless incense;
The stable thus seemed like Heaven.”

* “See that Babe”
This piece is an American Christmas spiritual.

Lyrics are as follows:
“See that babe, in the lowly manger,
He’s gonna take, all my sins away.
He’s gonna reign with my God in glory.
One of these, one of these days.”

Dr. Greenwald continued, “We’ll also be performing songs from England, Estonia, and Venezuela.  We will be accompanied by students Matthew Wilson on piano, Nicolette Dallessio on marimba; Rafael Sepulveda on guitar; and Courtney Wilson and Professor Rebecca Vega on flute.”

An audience Christmas Carol Sing-Along will concludes the event.

My Epic Beauty Fails

One day as I was looking around a high-end cosmetics store for a new lipstick, a “beauty expert” approached me and said that I was so stunning I should forget the lipstick, and get a lip plumper instead. Getting a Handle on Thanksgiving

This year, on our National Day of Thanks, I would like to express my gratitude for having hands.

We typically don’t thank our body parts because they seldom leave us.  Most of us have not experienced unfortunate accidents or suffered the horrible consequences of war; tragic events  which might cause us to lose a limb.

Most of us take our fingers and hands and elbows ...
