SPARTA, NJ – The pond at Station Park was teeming with young anglers for the annual Trout Derby last week. Some brought worms others tried hotdogs.  There were not many caught but it was not for lack of trying. Reportedly only one trout was taken out of the pond and that was by a blue heron.

Many youngsters joined the fun after the little league baseball opening day ceremony. Fifty families participated according to Township Manager Bill Close.

Sparta FOP sponsored the event and several Sparta Police Officers were at the pond talking with the participants. Members of Trout Unlimited were also on hand to give fishing advice and assistance.

A few lucky winners went home with a new fishing pole, from the raffle drawn each hour.  The day was organized by the Sparta Recreation Department and the Sparta Recreation Committee.
