SPOTSWOOD, NJ - There were two weeks left in the Spotswood Recreation Department's winter programs when the coronavirus stay-at-home order impacted Garden State residents. Subsequent spring programs were canceled and eventually even the REC Department's popular summer camps and events would also be called off. However, that did not stop the recreation department from continuing to try to offer residents activities and fitness alternatives while they were stuck at home.

The Spotswood Recreation Department website began offering virtual activities including homeschooling ideas, virtual tours, sports, games, health and fitness workouts and more. To participate, residents simply need to head over to the Spotswood Recreation Department's website.

Spotswood's Recreation Department is run by a committee of 13 residents typically appointed by the mayor. The department is made up of Spotswood Recreation Department Director Diane Spiegelhoff, Chairperson Rich O'Brien, Vice-Chairperson Andrew Zaborney, Communications Liaison Donna Faulkenberry, Recording Secretary Grace Parlitsis, photographer Diane Wells, James Curnal, Bob Hilse, Steve Zmijewski, Cindy Alongi, Angela Andre, Glen Betler, Melissa Hallerman, Dan Hurley, John Lavelle and Sal Masucci.

Once the virtual REC Center got rolling, the Spotswood Recreation Department asked residents to share their photos of families enjoying the activities posted. Zaborney put together the results for a video that showcases residents making the most of their time at home.

“These have been unique and trying times for all of us," O'Brien said. "It was disappointing to have to close our playgrounds and cancel some recreation events that are near and dear to us in Spotswood."

“So when we put our heads together, Donna Faulkenberry, Andrew Zaborney, our tech wizard, Cindy Alongi and I envisioned asking our residents to photograph themselves engaged in fun activities at home," O'Brien continued. "We partnered with the Spotswood PTA through our REC Board Member and PTA President Melissa Hallerman to get the word out. Andrew then put those photos together in a great video we are thrilled to share."
