Boys in middle school and high school are invited to join the new Young Men's Choir recently launched by the Children's Chorus of Sussex County (CCSC).  The choir is directed by music educator, Christopher Henke, and the group rehearses on Sunday evening at Christ Episcopal Church, 62 Main Street, in Newton.   Membership is open to youths from Northern New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania.

"I would like to see young men of the community who are interested in expressing themselves through vocal music consider becoming a part of the ensemble," noted Henke. "As a music educator, my first priority is to ensure a diverse understanding and appreciation of an eclectic mix of musical genres.  I hope to see the ensemble expand to include a diverse group of young men."

The CCSC recently celebrated its 25th anniversary of serving youngsters in the region.  The program has always included boys in its choirs for younger singers, but never had a place for middle school and high school-aged boys until now.  Henke points out that for students interested in music, a program which takes place outside of school could be significant on many levels.  "As a full-time music educator, I am aware scheduling classes can be a challenge for young men and women in junior and high school.  For those for whom music is important, a community-based ensemble, outside of the regular school day, may be or become a vital part of the life of those young people."

Henke joined the CCSC staff expressly to coordinate the Young Men’s Choir.  He is currently serving as the Junior High Choir Director at Kittatinny Regional High School.  Henke holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, with an emphasis in Choral Music and Pipe Organ Performance, as well as a Master’s degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.  He is a member of the VoiceCare Network and a published composer.
