EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ -- Scoring 1,000 career points is a notable athletic achievement. Trying to attain that goal in the spotlight of a one-and-done state playoff game brings additional stress to that athlete.

Neither seemed to be an issue as Becton High School's Nick Monahan scored his 1,000th career point in the Wildcats 68-56 win over  Arts High School in the first round of the NJSIAA Group 1, Section 2 game on Tuesday evening at home. His 24 points on the evening put him over the 1000 point threshold, and made him a member of a rather unique club -  players who have scored 1000 points while playing for two separate high schools. Monahan's first 132 points came as a member of Hasbrouck Heights during his sophomore season. He transferred to Becton at the beginning of his junior year.

The basket came as time was winding down in the third quarter. Monahan took a pass from teammate Brian Peralta and sank a three-pointer with seconds remaining in the period.

"It's the greatest feeling I've ever felt. " Monahan said. " I really worked hard for this.  It took days of me going to a local park and just shooting for hours. It was so much work to get where I'm at today and I enjoyed every second of it.  The crowd was amazing.   I felt all the love and support rooting for me and it's a great feeling."

"I didn't really feel any pressure this game, I just went out there with one thing on my mind and that was that we have to win," he said.

"Nick has worked exceptionally hard and is a committed team player. The coaching staff, his teammates, and the whole school is proud of this monumental achievement," said Becton head coach Dan Balaban. "He has tremendous work ethic and it is a well-deserved accomplishment."

'Nick is a great player, and an even better kid," said Hasbrouck Heights head coach Mike Cebulla.  "i've been rooting for him since he left, except for when he played us, of course. It is a tremendous accomplishment and I'm happy he achieved it."

The eighth-seeded Wildcats will play top seed American History on Thursday evening in Newark.
