CHATHAM, NJ - The Chatham Township Committee and the Chatham Area Chamber of Commerce are reminding area residents to shop local in Chatham this year and on Thursday night, Dec. 13, held an event with Santa in the Hickory Tree Shopping Center to encouraging people to do just that.
The event was originally scheduled prior to Hurricane Sandy because there would have been more people outside and warmer temperatures. Committee Member Laura Ali Nonnenmacher along with Santa and her three children walked around greeting residents with candy canes and holiday cheer.
“We’re trying to support the local businesses so that they have more support and more promotional activities so they get people to shop local,” Ali Nonnenmacher said.
She added there are more events planned to help businesses in Chatham.
Her kids were happy to see Santa, but also enjoyed frozen yogurt at IYO, a new establishment that opened in June. Her 13-year –old son Jack said it’s always fun to see Santa.
“I think it’s pretty cool that he’s coming here,” he said. “I like to support the businesses.”
His younger brother, Tommy, who is in the second grade, had his face buried in caramel frozen yogurt and said he was really eager to meet Santa. He said the frozen yogurt is amazing and he would recommend it to everyone.
“I think it’s awesome that he came all the way from the North Pole and he’s going to tell everyone who's naughty or nice,” Tommy said.
