SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ - More than 200 eighth graders, now members of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School's Class of 2020, were recognized for successful completion of their education at Terrill Middle School (TMS).

Speakers at the event held at the high school, included TMS Principal Dr. Kevin Holloway, Student Council President Antoinette Chango, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Margaret Hayes, and SPFHS Principal Dr. David Heisey.

Each student’s name was called, in alphabetical order, to come to the stage and receive his or her Certificate of Recognition. Several Board of Education members, Dr. Hayes, TMS Assistant Principal Ralph Gerace, and Dr. Holloway congratulated each student.

The ceremony included performances by the TMS 7th Grade Band and the TMS a capella choir, which sang “I’ll Always Remember You” by Miley Cyrus. Also during the evening, the school honored the following retiring teachers:

  • Ms. Frederick, Fifth Grade Teacher
  • Ms. Degnan, Guidance Counselor
  • Mr. Pagano, Special Instructor

Choral Director Kale Thompson was honored at the ceremony as Terrill’s 2016 Teacher of the Year for his outstanding work with the choirs, initiation of the a capella group and the renewal of a theater program and production at the school.

Two graduates were recognized or their exceptional dedication to community service: John Veglia and Mallory Banks. Veglia hosted an annual Haunted House, in which all proceeds go towards cancer research. Banks organized the Rockin' Austism event at LaGrande Park in April to raise awareness and funds for autism.

The majority of students in the graduating class will attend SPFHS, while others will be spreading out to schools like Union Catholic, Union County Vo-Tech Schools and the Delbarton School.
