SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Volunteers are invited to grab gloves, rakes and wheelbarrows and meet at Village Hall at 1 p.m. on Sunday to help clean up parks and playgrounds.

Sheena Collum, chairwoman of the Citizens Public Safety Committee, said that more than 60 volunteers already have signed up on the South Orange Community Cleanup and Food Drive Facebook event page. Food donations will be collected for Our Lady of Sorrows food pantry. Volunteers should not bring power tools, such as chain saws, Collum said.

In addition, information will be distributed on emergency preparedness.

The cleanup day was an outgrowth of the many emails residents sent asking what they could do to help. Collum said that the Department of Public works “has its plate full” with major street cleanup, so volunteers will collect debris for the DPW to pick up on Monday.

She said that hot chocolate will be served and that Bunny’s Restaurant is donating pizza.

Among the sponsors of the event are the DPW, the Office of Emergency Management, the Environmental Commission, the Citizens Public Safety Committee and the Community Emergency Response Team.
