Just because this is the year of Conoravirus quarantines and social distancing, doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy a festive Cinco De Mayo celebration.

There are lots of fun ways to stay in and enjoy this Mexican-American celebration, says Rei Vazquez, owner of El Gallo Authentic Mexican Cuisine in Hawthorne, NJ.

Here are five ways to celebrate Cinco De Mayo at home.

Our newsletter delivers the local news that you can trust.

1 — Make it fun for the kids — One fun way to get the whole family involved is by building your meals. This Cinco De Mayo also doubles as Taco Tuesday, so families can build your tacos or meals together.

“It looks messy, but we all know that everything that looks messy is tasty,” says Vazquez.

2 — Encourage a virtual party — “Just the other night, my mom and her siblings all eating together on FaceTime. That’s a great way to celebrate with the extended family,” says Vazquez.

Friends and families can join each other on their screens and share one big celebration. Some companies are even publishing Cinco De Mayo themed Zoom backgrounds and Spotify playlists. There’s no end to how authentic you can make your event.

3 — Learn about other cultures — Cinco De Mayo, Spanish for May 5, celebrates Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5 1862. Over time, the date has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American Culture.

“This is a great time to explain other cultures to our children,” says Vazquez. Our countries are neighbors and Mexican food is almost part of the American culture now. This is a great time to further understanding of both of our histories and traditions.”

4 — Remember what is important — Our time inside can also be a time of reflection.

“The quarantine taught a lot of people that we don’t need a lot of things to be happy,” says Vazquez. The people in our homes — the ones we don’t need to wear a mask around — those are some of the most important people in our lives. This is a good time to create new lasting memories with them.

5 — Plan your Mexican-American feast — Authentic Mexican restaurants like El Gallo will certainly have Taco Tuesday/Cinco De Mayo themed specials running all day.

“We are offering $5 off when you spend $15 for everyone who brings or shows the coupon on our site," says Vazquez. "While you are there, you can download our special flan recipe and make your dessert. It’s another fun way to celebrate with the family."
