AVON-BY-THE-SEA, NJ — When it comes to a traditional meal on St. Patrick’s Day, it’s all about the corned beef, cabbage and potatoes. As for dessert, The Macaroon Shop has a bounty of baked goods that will keep those Irish eyes smiling around the dinner table.

In addition to a wide selection of specialty cakes colorfully decorated as shamrocks, leprechaun hats and pots of gold, award-winning frog cupcakes and freshly baked Irish soda bread are perennial favorites at the full-service bakery at 107 Main Street in Avon-by-the-Sea.

“Be sure to grab a couple green frog cupcakes for the kids,” said Claire Morrison, co-owner of the shop with her husband, Chris. “St. Patrick’s Day is a really fun holiday for us at The Macaroon Shop. We made a big painted Irish potato that is hanging in the awning and decorated the window with shamrocks.

“Chris had Guinness Luxury Fudge and Toffee shipped in from Ireland, and we get boxes of Oh Ryan’s Irish Potatoes from Philadelphia,” she said. “Don’t let the name fool you! Irish potatoes are yummy coconut cream candies that are rolled in cinnamon. They just look like tiny potatoes.”

These Irish-inspired treats are perfect to bring to a St. Patrick’s Day gathering, not only because they are delicious but make for great conversation pieces before they all disappear, Morrison added.

And no visit to The Macaroon Shop is complete without picking up a box of its signature macaroons. For nearly nine decades, the shop has been delighting customers with coconut and almond macaroons made exactly the same way — using the same ingredients — since 1930. And they happen to be gluten-free.

“If you’ve never tasted our macaroons, you’re in for a treat. Just stop in, mention TAPinto Belmar/Lake Como, and ask for a coconut and an almond macaroon.”
