September 5, 2013 at 9:07 PM

WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield Historical Society (WHS) will host its fifth annual Apple Fest fundraiser on Sat., Oct. 5, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the lawn of the historic Reeve House, located at 314 Mountain Avenue in Westfield. Rain date is Sunday, Oct. 6.

“The fest is geared toward families with kids probably around 10 and under, but also for couples and singles of all ages interested in touring the Reeve House and grounds and participating in the adult activities, which include the barbershop quartet, the pie competition, viewing the museum exhibits, browsing the antiques sale and having lunch and just chatting at the 1910-themed Apple Café,” said WHS Trustee Lee Perry.

Games are geared for kids three and and each game can be adjusted for age, explained Perry.

“You will win a prize 90 percent of the time! Pumpkin painting and face painting are for all ages of kids, especially the pumpkin painting. There will also be croquet for both adults and kids and homemade baked goods and mums for sale,” he said.

The apple pie contest is open to the public. New contest categories this year include one for children and one for men. Contact the WHS’s office at 908-654-1794 for information on how to submit a pie. After a judging by local chefs, whole pies and slices will be for sale.

Apple Fest attracted more than 300 people last year and the society hopes to have even more attendees this year, according to Perry.

“Last year we raised over $3,000 minus expenses,” said Perry.

“The money we raise helps to support the organization and the activities, programs and exhibits we provide the community,” he said. “Since restoring the Reeve House we have been working to provide more programs at the house in addition to our Wednesday luncheon programs and Friday evening programs.”

This year the WHS will host open houses for teachers and realtors, seminars on tea paraphernalia and clock making in in New Jersey, a veteran's event, an oral history project with a high school reunion class and a program on antique Valentines.

“We are in the process of scheduling an artist's book exhibit and exhibits and seminars with local artists,” added Perry.

The WHS is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing Westfield's rich heritage for future generations. The newly renovated Reeve House serves as the organization's headquarters, museum, and history and cultural center.

Membership in the WHS is open to all. For more information, visit the membership table at Apple Fest, call the WHS office at 908-654-1794 or visit
