CORAL SPRINGS, FL - Every week or so, a group of volunteers from Chabad of Coral Springs give out bags and boxes of food to those in need.

One helper is an 84-year-old who survived the atrocities of the Nazis.

Rosa Kleinman works regularly at the food pantry operation, helping with packaging, labeling, and other tasks.

The mother-in-law of Chabad of Coral Springs’ Executive Director, Rabbi Avraham Friedman, has a simple reason for showing up.

“Why not? That’s a Jewish trait to be helpful and to give to others as long as you have the strength and you are able to,” Kleinman said this week.

Kleinman, who lives in Coral Springs, fled the Nazis from her native Poland as a child.

After fleeing to Siberia and the death of her parents, she and her siblings were separated and spread out across parts of Asia. She landed in an orphanage where she stayed until the end of World War II.

From there, she was among the Jewish children who were moved to France to attend a Jewish school. Kleinman lived there until she graduated from school and married. She eventually moved to the Crown Heights section of New York City where she raised her family.

Kleinman retired to Coral Springs with her daughter, Chanie Friedman, and son-in-law Rabbi Friedman.

After living through the Nazi regime, Kleinman kept her faith and spent much of her life giving back to her community, her family said.

Even now, at her age, she continues to help any way she can.

“As my mother always likes to say, ‘if she is able to stand on her own two feet, she will give,’” Chanie Friedman said. “That’s what we do as Jews. We give to others and help others. We do what we can. We are in it as part of a community.”

Chabad Of Coral Springs distributes food when it’s made available to the organization, which is at3925 N. University Drive. Check their Facebook page to find out when a shipment is coming from Walmart, Farm Fresh, or Feeding South Florida. No documentation is required to pick up food.
