SOMERSET, NJ - Hundreds of cyclists from around the area are expected to help fight hunger in the 30th edition of what has become a community tradition, the annual Tour de Franklin on April 28.

The charity bike ride is organized by the Franklin Food Bank.

According to organizers, Tour de Franklin started in 1989, when local resident and cyclist, Paul Goldberg, recruited his fellow cyclists on a bike ride to support the Franklin Food Bank. Goldberg and his team raised $700 that year, and since then the ride has raised more than $75,000 each year since 2016, according to organizers.

The Tour de Franklin plays a major role in helping the Franklin Food Bank raise funds to help feed families, last year 1,800 families were assisted.

This year organizers have set a goal of raising $100,000, as of the publication of this article, more than half of the goal has been raised.

Tour Chairperson Lisa Frey is optimistic that this year's goal will be met.

“Many people sign up when the weather gets warmer, and we are hoping the good weather last weekend encourages them," Frey said. "Also, anyone who raises $300 gets a one-time-only 30th anniversary T-shirt."
