SOUTH PLAINFIELD - The South Plainfield Senior Center staff has been working to fill the calendar and keep members active despite the continued closure of their building. Utilizing the PAL Memorial Field turf field, located at 1250 Maple Avenue, classes are held every day of the week with Zumba Gold on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while Chair Yoga is held Tuesdays and Thursdays. October 19 is Meatball Monday from 12p.m. to 1p.m. and will be held at the back entrance of the Senior Center on 90 Maple Ave. A favorite of the center for years, the staff has adapted the event to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines.
“We have 90 seniors signed up to attend Meatball Monday,” said Tree Olano, South Plainfield Senior Center Director. “We’re so excited for the event!”
Once a month for over two years, the Senior Center has been transformed into an Italian eatery for Meatball Monday for seniors to enjoy meatball sandwiches and friendly conversation. Despite COVID-19 quarantine, the staff has continued the tradition while adjusting to the times. Italian-themed balloons and checker tablecloths will adorn the back entrance of the center as their beloved seniors drive by to pick up their meals and say a quick hello.
The staff has kept the needs of South Plainfield seniors a top priority over the months of quarantine, holding drive-by events such as Meatball Monday, picnics as well as a Storm Ready drive-by event to make sure have emergency supplies during storm season.
Twin City Pharmacy also took part in the activities to help keep seniors safe, offering free flu shots in early October in the vestibule of the center with open doors. They brought the famous Twin City hot dog cart and gave away free hot dogs.
Physical Activity is being encouraged as well so the seniors can remain healthy and keep their immune systems strong. Temperatures are checked upon arrival and a COVID-19 waiver must be signed before classes begin. Masks are also worn for check in, however, they are optional for class since chairs are placed at least 6-feet apart.
“We had our first Senior Chair Yoga on the turf field about three weeks ago, and we had 33 people!” said Olano. “We got off to a great start. Classes have grown each week. They’re extremely organized and safe.”
On Mondays, there is Zumba Gold from 1p.m. to 2p.m. (check in starts at 12:30p.m.) and Wednesday from 11:15a.m. to 12:15p.m. (check in starts at 10:45a.m.).
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, there is Chair Yoga from 11a.m. to 12p.m. (check in starts at 10:30a.m.).
