NUTLEY, NJ - The Boy Scout motto is "Be Prepared" and this weekend local scouts were out and about delivering handles grocery bags ahead of the annual 'Scouting for Food' drive taking place March 30. Those bags give residents the chance to 'be prepared' for grocery pick on Saturday.

Nutley's Gregory and Nicholas were spotted on Sunday getting ready to deliver bags throughout the township. Other scouts delivered more bags around town. Next Saturday morning, March 30, scout families will drive the township collecting bags that were left on doorsteps.

Residents are asked to leave their donations in a visible spot on the doorstep before 8:30 a.m.

While it is preferred that residents use the "official" bags, Nutley Family Service Bureau director Eileen Painter said that non-perishable food items in any bag are welcomed.

All residents who receive an "official" bag will get a visit on Saturday. Later this week TAPinto Nutley will share the telephone number to call to alert the scouts to put your home on the pick up list.

‘Scouting for Food’ is the largest single-day food drive in the country.  The first drive took place in St. Louis in 1985 and was adopted by the national organization in 1988. The Nutley event is the largest effort that supports the food pantry at Nutley Family Service Bureau.
