What’s unique about the clothing and accessories shop is that many of the items sold here are made by ethical and philanthropic brands, according to the owner Cat Fisher.

“When you explain who is behind it, customers feel better about buying that brand,” said Fisher.

Take Purpose Jewelry or Known Supply for example, the items are signed by the person who made them. Items from both brands are sold at Sadie’s.

Purpose Jewelry is made by women who escaped from human trafficking and clothing from Known Supply is made by people from countries outside of the United States who were negatively impacted by war, struggle financially, or who have dealt with other hardships.

Another brand carried at Sadie’s is United By Blue which makes men’s clothing and women’s accessories. United By Blue cleans a pound of trash out of the oceans and waterways for every item by their brand that’s sold. Their apparel and accessories are made from recycled materials.

“They send me clean-up kits for River Day and other things that I do here,” said Fisher.

Fisher is a big supporter of events in South Orange such as River Day, which is coming up on May 5 and Theater in the Park, which is scheduled for June 8.

She also strives to help everyone in the South Orange community. She has a working relationship with the JESPY House. Clients from the JESPY House volunteer at Sadie’s and Fisher’s other business in town Kitchen a la Mode.

“The volunteers come in for an hour and learn different skills,” Fisher said, noting that being inclusive to everyone whether it’s through teaching work skills or supporting philanthropic brands are great ways to give South Orange a vibrant downtown.
