GLEN ROCK, NJ - New to the borough this summer: "Second Sundays," an off-shoot of the previous Farmers Market concept from two years ago.
The market will operate on the five following dates: June 9, July 14, Aug. 11, Sept. 8 and Oct. 13. Location: 1 Harding Plaza, at Borough Hall.
At the April 10 work session, Councilwoman Arati Kreibich said it was "too difficult" for farmers to commit to 20 Sundays over the summer. Instead, the Glen Rock Farmers Market Committee, a subcommittee of the Glen Rock Environmental Commission, has organized a new concept: a community market held on five Sundays during the summer called "Second Sundays."
According to a press release, "Although there was strong interest from a variety of vendors, no produce farmers were available to participate in the market. A survey of the community demonstrated potential for a weekday farmers market; however, public safety concerns were cited by the Chief of Police as problematic for a weekday event outside Borough Hall."
The Borough intends to hire a part-time individual to manage the market which Kreibich said will be supported by vendor fees. There are currently 10 vendors interested in participating. The council discussed a $20 per hour stipend for the individual to manage the market, although the number of hours throughout the summer was not clear.
Officially called "Second Sundays in Glen Rock," it will be an "open air market with a focus on locally-produced, sustainably-sourced foods and crafts. From June to October, Second Sundays will be a place for residents to come together as a community to shop and enjoy art and music," per the press release.
