The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for several counties in New York state, including Allegany and Cattaraugus counties.
The watch is in effect until 2 p.m. Thursday.
The National Weather Service issues thunderstorm watches when conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. A severe thunderstorm by definition is a thunderstorm that produces hail 1-inch or larger in diameter and/or winds ofr 58 miles an hour o greater
During the watch, people should be prepared to move to a place of safety if threatening weather approaches.
