PISCATAWAY, NJ – Piscataway township employees and visitors to several municipal buildings will have a more pleasant time “going” whenever they "have to go" as plans are underway to begin renovating the restrooms during 2017.

The men's and women's restrooms in the municipal court lobby are considered a priority for upgrades as they “have been experiencing frequent failures," said township business administrator, Joe Criscuolo at Tuesday's regularly scheduled township council meeting.

Criscuolo and Mayor Brian Wahler have been reviewing the plans to do the renovations there as well as in the municipal building lobby and employee areas, the men's locker room in the police department, and those in the Department of Public Works.

"The bathrooms are being brought up to American with Disabilities Act standards and will be done in a sequence to avoid us having to get Port-A-Potties," Mayor Wahler said explaining that the restrooms will be done one at time over the course of the year.

He noted that the restroom upgrade project actually started last year in other township buildings including the Westergard Library and the police department's women's locker room.

But before the new work can begin the town council will have to approve additional funding to cover the costs of upgrading the heating and cooling system in each restroom which was not factored in the original project plans.

"The current systems are outdated and inefficient, but were considered state-of-the-art technology 40 or 50 years ago," said Criscuolo. "It makes sense to do this while refurbishing.”

He added that the current units are rusting due to age or don't work well enough for restroom users to stay warm during cold weather.

Work will first begin in the municipal court's public restrooms, followed by the DPW building and the men's police department locker room. The municipal building's restrooms are last on the list and will address those in the lobby and in the employee work areas.

Construction dates have not yet been determined.
