SPARTA, NJ – After 25 years of service, Sparta Township Water and Sewer employee Michael Sportelli has retired.  He was recognized for his service at the Sparta Township Council meeting last week.

“His 25 years of service has been marked by dedication, reliable service to the customers of Sparta Township and the surrounding towns,” Mayor Molly Whilesmith said, reading a proclamation.

“Our council wants to give you our heartfelt thanks,” Whilesmith said. “It is a happy and sad day.  You have more time on your hands to do the things you want to do but you will be sorely missed.”

Sparta Township Manager Bill Close said Sportelli had been a part of putting structure into place to get the operation to run as well as it does now.

“Thanks to Mike for his efforts,” Close said. “One of the cogs in the wheel that the people don’t see.  Day in and day out without much fanfare he showed up and went about his work.”
