JERSEY CITY, NJ - The prevailing haziness of the past few months is proving to be more than just mental today. That's because smoke from the massive wildfires impacting numerous locations along the West Coast of the United States has worked its way into the jetstream, creating a faint pall over East Coast skylines.

According to New York Metro Weather, "Visible satellite imagery shows hazy, smoky skies on what otherwise would be a clear afternoon throughout the Northeast. A thick plume of wildfire smoke persists between 15,000 and 20,000 feet above the ground."

As a result, the sky is tinged with a slightly brownish hue—nothing compared to the apocalyptic orange and red skies our fellow citizens are seeing out west, but still noticeable to the naked eye. The smoke's impact out here should make for some unique sunrise and sunsets, as it manages to mute our sunlight. The presence of smoke in the air will also have an effect on the temperature, as less sunlight getting through may keep things cooler over the next few days. Lows for the weekend are forecasted to dip down into the upper 40s.

As for air quality, the impacts to our area will be minimal given the altitude at which the smoke is traveling across the continent. Of course that's not the case for the those on the West Coast, as hazardous air conditions persist over widespread and heavily populated areas of the country.

As of press time, 27 people have died in wildfires that are ranging from Washington through Oregon to California, and now spreading as far east as Idaho.
