WEST ORANGE, NJ - The Celtic Sisters are inviting the West Essex community to their blood drive this Sunday at the West Orange Shillelagh Club located at 648 Prospect Ave, West Orange from 9am to 2pm.
West Caldwell resident and one of the Blood Drive Organizers Janet O'Keeffe Burke commented, "The Celtic Sisters, through the partnership of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, established this drive six years ago. Each year we collect over 100 pints of blood to give to the blood bank. It's always been held the Sunday before Thanksgiving, and people come out ready to donate as they enter into the holiday season."
The blood drive is held each year in memory of Frank Schott, who was the Chief of the Orange Fire Department.
Burke explained, "This has always been a bad time of year for blood supply. But this year, obviously, with Hurricane Sandy and the ensuing power shortages, people are focused on other things and donations are way down. We are hoping to help eliminate the shortages caused by the Hurricane."
The Blood Center of New Jersey website lists the general rules which apply to giving blood:
* Donors must be in good health
* Donors must be 16 years of age or older and there are no upper age limits
* Donors should eat meals at the regular times
"People can donate blood every 56 days," Burke stated, "and we hope they come out. The Shillelagh Club gives us their home for the day - we take over the second floor. Now - because we've grown - the Blood Center also sends their Mobile Unit Van so people won't be kept waiting."
This year - people are welcome to make an appointment for their blood donation by writing an email to email@example.com
"Please think about reserving a time slot - it helps us to minimize waiting and to maximize donations," Burke reminded, "but walk-ins are always welcome of course!"
According to the Blood Center website, very little changes after giving blood: "Your fluid volume is back to normal within 24 hours after you donate. Your white cell count returns to normal within 72 hours. An adult of average weight has about 10 to 12 pints of blood so the one taken is hardly missed."
Another good reason to donate - FREE IRISH BREAKFAST!
"We're thrilled to say the 5-star Stage Left Restaurant in New Brunswick will be providing a complimentary full Irish Breakfast with all the trimmings to each donor. It's really a great day, with a wonderful community atmosphere at the club." commented Burke.
You will be asked to supply your Social Security number, and after your initial donation, the blood bank will issue you a "unique donor ID number"
You will be deferred from giving blood if:
* You have had routine teeth cleaning or fillings within 24 hours
* You have had other dental work within 72 hours
* You have a sore throat or fever
* You have traveled to an area considered endemic to Malaria within 12 months
* You weigh less than 120 pounds
* Have AIDS or one of its symptoms or are at risk of getting and spreading the virus
According to the Blood Center: "There is NO risk of contracting any disease through donating blood. Each donor receives their own sterile blood bag and needle, which is used once, and then safely destroyed."
