An inmate at the Cattaraugus County Jail in Little Valley has tested positive for the coronavirus, the Cattaraugus County Health Department announced Saturday in a press release. The inmate was one of two new coronavirus cases the department confirmed Saturday, bringing the county’s total to 69.

The inmate has been asymptomatic. He has been in isolation within the facility and has not been in direct contact with any other inmates since his arrival, according to the press release.

“Given the global COVID-19 pandemic this situation is not surprising and one that the department and the jail has been in preparation for,” the department said in the press release. “The procedures put in place over two months ago were instituted to ensure the health and safety of staff and inmates should there be a case like this in the facility.”

According to the press release, all staff members will be checked for symptoms and temperature upon entry to the facility before every shift. Face coverings will be required when social distancing cannot be maintained. Increased cleaning and sanitization have been in use throughout the facility.

Inmates will be screened for symptoms at intake, according to the press release. Inmates who are tested for COVID-19 will remain in isolation until tests indicate negative results. Inmates are strongly encouraged to wear masks.

The other confirmed case is a man who lives in the southeast quadrant of the county. According to the press release, he was hospitalized on May 21 after experiencing weakness, diarrhea and hypo-magnesium. Prior to being discharged to a nursing home, the man was tested for COVID-19. His COVID-19 positive result came back Wednesday.

Since May 15, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the county has grown by 19, and two more people have died (bringing the total of deaths to four). There are 18 active cases of COVID-19 in the county; 47 individuals have recovered.
