CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Cedar Grove announced on Monday that the township pool would not be opening this summer. Recreation Director Marisa Landolfi-Jefferson sent a letter to residents to further clarify the reasons for keeping the pool closed. It follows:
Cedar Grove Pool Families,
It is with great disappointment we announce that the Cedar Grove Pool will not open for the 2020 summer season. We know that the pool season is a valued tradition in this town, so we did not want to make this announcement without giving you further explanation as to how we came to this very difficult decision.
First and foremost, please know that the number one factor in this decision is the safety of our pool staff and our pool patrons. The safety guidelines and protocols, are not ones that we are able to endure due to the shortage of money and staff that we would obtain this pool season. Our priority is the safety and protection of our members and staff.
In explaining the finances of the pool, we want to you understand that this was just another huge factor for us not being able to open. The Cedar Grove Pool is a utility. What this means is that it is solely operated on the money that is taken in throughout the summer. With the budget allotted for the pool season, the debt service, Personal Protective Equipment and other safety measures we would put in place to adhere to State regulations, this would put us in a deficit that we may not be able to recover from financially. We would like you to keep in mind that our goal is being able to open in the summers to come and if we open this summer, there is a very good chance that the deficit we incur will not allow us to open in future summers.
With all this being said, if we were to open the pool this summer, we would not only need to guarantee that we would get somewhere close to the usual amount of enrollment, but we would still need to charge the full amount per membership for a partial summer. Not only is the summer season cut in half, but with the newly announced guidelines, there is no guarantee with your membership, that you would be allowed in the pool at any given time as there are capacity restrictions that will be in place.
Once again, although we are disappointed as we know the pool is a summer staple in Cedar Grove, we have the interest of all of you and your families in mind. We would be asking you all to pay an immense fee and taking privileges away from you that you all deserve with your memberships. This is not how we operate, we need to be responsible for your health, safety and well-being, as well as financially accountable.
I personally thank you for your understanding in this decision, and we will be ready to open our beautiful pool next season and see all of our members enjoy without uncertainties.
