BAYONNE, NJ - For the members of IBEW Local 827, the union that represents Verizon workers across New Jersey, offering gratitude to healthcare workers in eight northern New Jersey hospitals means thanking the men and women on the frontline that took care of 12 of their members that tested positive for COVID-19.
“When they came out the hospital each had the same praise for the doctors, nurses, and maintenance staff that all played a part of their care,” Tom Kelly, business agent for the union told TAPinto Bayonne. “These patients are isolated, they can’t see their family, but the teams in the hospitals, as overworked as they have been, did their jobs with the utmost compassion."
On Thursday Kelly, whose wife is a nurse at Hackensack University Medical Center, and other representatives of the Local delivered lunch to 150 members of the Bayonne Medical Center staff. “It’s our way of saying thanks, letting them know we appreciate them.”
Raising money from their members, family, and friends for the lunches, along with the support of Verizon, IBEW 827 is also helping local businesses that have suffered during the public health crisis, and on Thursday chose Bayonne’s Pizza Master as the food providers.
“The members of IBEW 827 are also members of all the communities we work in,” Kelly said. “We want to support our own, we want to support local businesses, and we want to let healthcare workers know we appreciate them.”
