NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - NJ Transit has enhanced its cleaning efforts to include disinfected vehicles and major stations every 24 hours in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

The intensified cleaning regiment in stations includes additional disinfecting of frequent customer touchpoints such as ticket vending machines, handrails and door handles, according to a statement released by NJ Transit.

NJ Transit said it is using cleaning agents that contain anti-viral components such as bleach/water mixes and other disinfectant sprays.

NJ Transit's bus, light rail and commuter rail services cover more than 5,000 square miles. New Brunswick Train Station is one of the stops on NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor that stretches from Trenton to New York. It is NJ Transit's busiest commuter rail line.

NJ Transit said it is working with the New Jersey Department of Health and other state and federal resources to  monitor, and if need be, respond to emergent health concerns that could impact customers and employees. It has formed an internal task force that includes staff from its medical, office of emergency management, environmental, safety and communications departments and all of its operating lines.

Although the public transit agency provides nearly a million passenger trips each weekday, NJ Transit said its preliminary data indicates a roughly 20% drop in bus and rail ridership.
