EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - Middlesex County's Relay for Life, a community outreach program of the American Cancer Society, was out in full force this Saturday as cancer research supporters, family members of survivors, students and community health activists joined forces at the Brunswick Square Mall to combine their energy in the fight against the "emperor of all maladies."
The energy was high and the mood was hopeful as hundreds of people visited the sign-up tables for Relay for Life events throughout the county. The theme - "Help Fight Cancer in Our Community" was apparent as representatives East Brunswick, Old Bridge and other local towns were on hand to engage with those in attendance, spread a little joy, raise some money, and increase awareness of the need to stop cancer in its tracks.
According to materials distributed at the event, "Beating out biggest rival takes more than breakthrough research. It takes things like our 24/7 cancer help line and free rides to chemo."
Celebrities (sort of) were on hand for the event, and many selfies were taken with the likes of Captain Jack Sparrow, cast members from Star Wars, and a few well-coiffed Disney princesses. There was a flash mob of dancers from Old Bridge, a glitter crew, and a mehendi station - all accepting donations for the cause.
