NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Spring Grove Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, a Marquis Health Services skilled nursing facility, gave back to their Overlook Medical Center healthcare heroes behind the mask by treating them to a free breakfast at Bagel Cafe in New Providence.

The doctors, nurses and healthcare workers were treated to a breakfast sandwich and coffee along with the fixings by Bagel Cafe. The healthcare workers were greeted by Jennifer Hertzog, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, and David Karfunkel, Regional Director of Operations of Marquis Health Services, who wanted to personally thank each and every hero.

Hertzog and Karfunkel talked with TAPinto and discussed a few ways they have adapted since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the doors closed to outside visitors since mid-March, families have been able to visit virtually through Skype and window visits. "We're trying to be as creative as we can," said Karfunkel. "We ordered iPads for each facility." On Mother's Day, "we set up calls to all the families and booked reservations" for electronic visits. "We had slots built for 20 minutes and the families were able to FaceTime with their mom. That day was over the top -- just unbelievable."

Spring Grove, being a healthcare provider, has admitted patients with COVID-19. Hertzog explained, the community is getting it. Due to the level of nursing and clinical leadership, the facility, for the most part, has been able to treat the COVID-19 cases in-house without the need to transfer the patient to the hospital, said Karfunkel.

Hertzog explained that when new patients are admitted, "you have to do that with extreme caution. We have designated areas in the center that are closed off." --- So the challenge is whether you come in negative or you come in not tested, you go into a special unit for 14 days where you're observed, said Karfunkel. "After 14 days, if there are no symptoms -- you get moved to our subacute unit if you're there for subacute or you get moved to the long term care unit that is clean. -- If someone is admitted who has the virus, they will go straight to the unit that is sealed off."

Spring Grove is thankful for their community and recognize the tireless effort of the healthcare workers and first responders. This Bagel Cafe breakfast is a token of their appreciation to these heroes behind the mask for their incredible efforts during this pandemic time!
