ROSELLE PARK, NJ - Roselle Park’s Environmental Commission has announced that change is in the air for the 2019 community garden. The Valley Road community garden was formerly constructed with straw bales; the new garden will feature twenty (20) 8’x 4’ raised boxed beds composed of organic mushroom compost and peat moss. Each bed provides 32 sq. feet of growing space and are large enough for sharing. Two of the beds will be handicap accessible thanks to Roselle Park BSA Troop 56’s Eagle Scout Service project.
Roselle Park's Environmental Commission was recently awarded volunteer service assistance from Sustainable Jersey in partnership with The Center for Community Engaged Learning and Research at The College of New Jersey. Twenty students from the Center will assist with the community garden project on Saturday, April 13, 2019.
Groundwork Elizabeth will be providing 32 plants per bed. Plants will be available free of charge to residents after May 11th.
RPEC Chairperson Arnulfo Toro is a certified permaculture designer and experienced organic food grower. Mr. Toro designed the overall layout of the garden and will be conducting educational seminars that teach square foot gardening methods, companion planting, and how to maximize your food production and harvest through season extension practices.
Roselle Park's Environmental Commission say they welcome community neighbors, fellow gardeners, and anyone who might be curious to learn how to grow their own food. RPEC wants to create a place for community building through education in sustainable gardening practices for adults and youth alike.
The cost of a seasonal raised bed is $50.00. Reservations are first come, first served and open to all Roselle Park residents. If you are interested in purchasing a bed, would like to volunteer or be part of the food evolution/revolution contact Arnulfo Toro at EnvironmentalCommmissionRP@gmail.com or sign up in person at the following locations:
