Green Infrastructure and Stormwater Management

On Wednesday, September 11, the Berkeley Heights Environmental Commission will host a presentation on controlling stormwater runoff through green infrastructure. Christopher C. Obropta, Ph.D., P.E.,  Extension Specialist in Water Resources at Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program, will give a presentation to empower municipalities to:
  1. take action by updating local ordinances and master plans to incorporate green infrastructure.
  2. take action by working with Rutgers and others to develop green infrastructure plans for their community (Impervious Cover Assessments (ICAs), Impervious Cover Reduction Action Plans (RAPs), and Green Infrastructure Feasibility Studies.
  3. implement green infrastructure demonstration projects in their community.
  4. develop master plans to incorporate green infrastructure and other sustainable practices into corporate campus, school campus, and other larger properties.
  5. encourage individuals to become green infrastructure champions.

Green infrastructure is a cost-effective, resilient approach to managing wet weather impacts that provides many community benefits, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. While single-purpose gray stormwater infrastructure—conventional piped drainage and water treatment systems—is designed to move urban stormwater away from the built environment, green infrastructure reduces and treats stormwater at its source while delivering environmental, social, and economic benefits.  This presentation will be of interest to local planning boards, zoning boards, township councils and even the general public.
