UNION TWP. (Hunterdon), N.J. — A coyote tested positive for rabies on July 10, according to an alert by the Hunterdon County Department of Health.
The coyote was found in the area of Race Street and County Route 513.
Area residents who may have had contact with this coyote any time between June 22 and July 6 should notify their primary care physician immediately or the Hunterdon Medical Center Emergency Room to discuss concerns, regarding possible exposure and the need for post exposure prophylaxis treatment.
There are several horses and other livestock in the area where the coyote was found. Livestock as well as pets should be vaccinated.
The health department warns residents not to pick up stray animals as saliva from infected animals should be considered infectious.
