N.J. and N.Y. 4-Hers Prove Their Mettle On The National Stage

New Jersey took home the team award in the communications contest at the 2017 Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup. Both New Jersey and New York took home ribbons in each of the events which put a 4-H member’s equine knowledge to the test.

Contests are held in speaking, horse judging and hippology.

The communications contest was comprised of public speaking, individual and team presentations. New Jersey placed in the top 10 in each category with Kara Johnson, placing fourth; Brittany Smith, fifth and Mannetta L. McAvaddy and Erica Worek, ninth.

In the horse judging contest, members judge several classes of horse in-hand as well as in various performance classes. They are scored according to how closely they agree with the official judges who watch the classes simultaneously. Members also have to present their reasoning for placing the classes orally, without notes.

The hippology contest has tests the members’ knowledge several different ways — via written exams, answering questions in response to viewing a photo and identifying items at stations. Teams are also given a topic or problem to solve. The team has a few minutes to discuss the issue and then give a short presentation. There is also a horse judging phase.

Scott Anderson, a long-time 4-H leader in Sussex County until he retired to South Carolina was honored for his service to the 4-H Roundup.

Anderson was a club leader from 1988 to 2003. He first attended the Eastern National 4-H Round Up with his daughter, Krista in 1996. He has been there in some capacity every year, except one since. Her served as a chaperone for the New Jersey team, when Krista and her sister Megan competed. He then judged the Public Speaking contest, before joining the Management Committee as co-superintendent for the Team Demonstrations.

During hs tenure in New Jersey he was a delegate to the state 4-H Horse Project Advisory Council, which he chaired xfor four years. He also served as a board and executive board member for the Sussex County Farm & Horse Show/New Jersey State Fair for a number of years.
